So Who Is Ian Finlay?

ian finlay
Ian is an "A" grade mechanic by trade, a welder, and a builder.

He has built and sold 7 homes, but today he prefers to work on projects that involve putting up or tearing down commercial structures. The more challenging the job, the more appealing her finds it!

Having being raised on a farm with 6 siblings and expected to work the property, doing everything from fencing, milking, and haymaking before and after school he quickly acquired the ability at a very young age to "fix anything". That means today he is equally comfortable rebuilding a cake mixer or a truck.

In recent years Ian has concentrated on large commercial demolition jobs around Whangarei. One job involved dropping 8 old buildings on a block, each of which contained asbestos. This created all sorts of challenges, but figuring out how to do the tough jobs is what he is good at.

Additionally he has completed several project management gigs which he also enjoys.

Services Offered

Construction Work / Project Management

Ian is skilled when it comes to assembling the right team to assemble your dream commercial project.

Whether the job requires brickwork, welding, cutting concrete...

Ian will bring in specialists (as needed) to handle interior fitout, concrete laying, concrete cutting, steel fabrication and erection, safe asbestos testing and removal, electrical, air conditioning, plumbing, painting and so on. Every aspect of building.

Ian will find the right people to get it done and bring them in at the right phase of the project.

This includes organizing and seeing through the earthworks portion of the job where the site is prepared. Drainage, power installation, metal in/out, levelling, and compacting - everything that needs doing he will see that each portion of the job gets done in the right order.

Shown below are the results of some construction projects which Ian has either participated in directly (getting his hands dirty) or overseen as project manager.

Construction Case Studies

After removing an old house from a large section Ian then built three townhouses on it (two of which are visible).

This complex was originally built to house a fitness facility a decade earlier. The building was later dismantled (steel structure, roofing, windows), sold, and shipped to Samoa to make a supermarket. Then a new two-level building was built to host a law firm and additional tenancies.

Building on a sloping site is challenging. This site had to be excavated and a huge retaining wall added before the structure above it could be built.

In order for a car wash business to operate a storm water drainage system needed to be put in place. Before this could be done tar seal had to be removed and the site excavated.
Demolition Work

Knocking things down can be fun. But it's also a serious job that needs to be executed the right way to ensure it can be done safely, efficiently and cost effectively.

And all you are left with is a clean, clear site ready for your next phase.
